Abstract

Sound connection design is essential for safety and economy of steel structures. Economical connection designs mostly take into account practicalities of fabrication and erection. True behavior of connections is complex, variable and very difficult to analyse exactly. One of the most important aspects that one needs to take into account when designing a steel structure is the dissipative mechanism of the structure as well as structural properties of connection. The objective of this paper is to explain the properties of steel connection i.e. connection strength, stiffness and ductility. These properties are the major concern for seismic design. And also explain how to reduce cost of connection in steel structure.
